Hello, and welcome back to another review where today we will go in depth with an incredible car.....or truck! We will continue with the SUV theme with the monster Mercedes 4x4 squared. The 4x4 is a millionaire's vision of an off-roading machine. The high-mounted, G-class styled body with a V8 powerful enough to crank out 416 horsepower, and 450 lb-ft of torque. The 4x4 squared weighs a total of 6,825 lbs, with a towing range up to 7,000 lbs. The Mercedes AMG team wanted one thing with the new 4x4 square. And that was to simplify everything. They took the all-wheel-drive power-train including port axles from the 6x6, took away one axle, and blended it in with the newly developed G-class chassis. In return, they got the beastly off-roading machine, team Mercedes needed. When you think of the Mercedes company, you think about the sports cars, their luxurious coupes and convertibles, and G wagons, not gigantic off-roading machines. The production of the 4x4 square introduced a new style for Mercedes. Introduced the rugged style of off-roading and mud. The 4x4 has a ground clearance of around 1 and a half feet and a forging depth of around 1,000 mm or 3.2 feet before water or mud reaches the underside. The aluminum alloy crankcase of the 4x4's biturbo V8 engine ensures the lightest weight, while cranking out the most power. Twin exhaust pipes on both sides in front of the rear wheels accumulate the typical G-class sound. From quiet mumbling in neutral to loud booming accelerations. With the 4x4 in sport mode, it can drive through bends and turns as good as sports cars rather than a 6,825 lb truck. Other features of the 4x4 square include black or carbon fiber roof and wheel wells and with high mounted LED lights. Other blacked out options include the bottom mirror trim, front grille, front tow bar, uniquely designed rear bumper, side skirts, and rims. The interior almost has more features than the exterior. You choose from any factory color you like for the seats, dash, ect. Not to mention the carbon. From the steering wheel inserts, gas and brake, center console to the AC vents and door handles, and much more is what you could add in carbon fiber. Diamond pattern seats give the driver and passenger a much more comfortable driving experience, while giving the seats a nice look as well. Towards the right side of the drivers side seat and left of the passenger side you will find your seat controls where you can adjust your seat angle, and modes. The giant steering wheel has Alcantara grips with more settings to the left and right of the horn. To the right of the wheel is the start/stop button which will activate the beastly V8. Climate control settings, modes and displays are located throughout the lengthy carbon fiber center console. Above that is the Mercedes infotainment center with their 5 media options (Navigation, Music, Telephone, NTG Menu, and Settings.) The back row of 3 unique seats work great to either take your kids to school, or take your business partners to your mansion (depending on your lifestyle.) Alcantara headliner also gives the 4x4 a more luxurious cabin feel, while adding on to cool interior features. With all of these interior and exterior options for just the price of $227,000, we can’t decide if it’s bang for its buck, or priced well. Use the comments to express your opinion if it's priced well, too high, or too low.
The specific 4x4 square that I was lucky enough to see was in Lumo yellow and had two tone silver and black rims fitted in front of bright red brakes on a monsterous set of Toyo R/T tires. It was imported from its home in Toronto, where it sits at the West Seneca Auto planet waiting for a buyer. This particular G wagon was the g550 model rather than the larger g500 model. What is the difference you ask? Well, the g550 engine has a 4.0 L twin-turbo V8, making around 416 hp, while the g500 has a 4.0 L turbocharged V8, cranking around 422 stock hp. The g500 is a lot heavier, but in the end, creates 6 more hp than the g550 model, so no drastic differences between the two. Along with the tires, this 4x4 is also equipped with carbon fiber wheel wells, full carbon roof with leds, with an aluminum rear bumper and side skirts. Red suspension above both the front and back tires, makes for a smoother, less stiff ride. The interior was in black leather with a carbon center console. Seeing this 4x4 in person was a unique experience for me. Hopefully, the 4x4 square sells to an owner in Buffalo, (who doesn't keep it stored) so I could see it a few more times this summer.
